Candidate for U.S. Senate William Tong made the following statement today following Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s “State of the State” address at the opening of the 2012 Connecticut legislative session.
“Yesterday, the Governor outlined a vision for Connecticut’s future that included bold education reform. I believe that reforming our education system is key not only to Connecticut’s future, but to the entire nation’s. That’s why I’m proud to stand with him in supporting key reform measures, including expanded early childhood education, greater support for high-quality models like charter and magnet schools, and a more sensible approach to teacher tenure.”
“As part of my plan to Reclaim the American Dream, I’ve called for
- Universal pre-kindergarten education in Connecticut to stop our state’s worst-in-the-nation achievement gap where it starts — at the beginning;
- Five new vocational and technical schools and five new science and math academies in the next six years to prepare our children for the globalized economy of the future;
- Recruiting the best and brightest new generation of teachers ever by offering them tuition assistance, competitive starting salaries, and sensible career compensation packages that are connected to performance and student achievement.”
“My plan is to make Connecticut’s schools the best in the nation. Early childhood education, supporting high-quality school models, and taking a more sensible approach to teacher tenure are essential elements of that plan. I look forward to being at the forefront of the fight to bring about these important reforms.”
