SECRETARY NORMAN Y. MINETA ENDORSES
WILLIAM TONG’S UNITED STATES SENATE BID
The American Dream is Still Alive, We Just Have to Fight for It
Stamford, CT – Today, Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, who represented San Jose in Congress for over twenty years and served in the Cabinets of both Democratic and Republican presidents, endorsed William Tong’s bid for the United States Senate.
“I am humbled and deeply grateful to receive Secretary Mineta’s endorsement. We share a common belief that with renewed confidence, America will thrive again,” said Tong.
Norman Mineta served as the first Asian American City Council member in San Jose, then as the first Asian American Mayor of a major U.S. city, and then as a Member of Congress. Secretary Mineta was appointed the U.S. Secretary of Commerce by President William J. Clinton in 2000, becoming the first Asian American Cabinet Secretary, and was later appointed the U.S. Secretary of Transportation by President George W. Bush in 2001.
“My parents came to this country because they knew that it was a place where individuals could take hold of their own futures and pursue their dreams; a place where their children would have the opportunity to live a better life than their parents,” said Mineta.
“I grew up in a home where we were taught that we have an obligation to leave the world a better place for our children and for our future generations.”
“Similarly, William Tong understands this obligation and has committed much of his life to improving our communities,” Mineta continued.
Growing up William knew what it meant to struggle and he knows the meaning of hard work. He sees the obstacles facing American families every day. He knows what it will take to turn Connecticut and this country around. In these demanding times, he is best suited to take on this challenge in Congress and help build a better future for our families,” said Mineta.
“Secretary Mineta is widely respected around the country. He has served two administrations as a Cabinet Secretary and he knows that jumpstarting this economy and putting Americans back to work is the number one priority for elected officials. His endorsement of our campaign is a testament to our message of job creation, hope, and knowledge that the American Dream is still alive,” said Tong.
